Why Heat-Resistant Toughened Glass Is Perfect for Behind Your Hob
Our heat resistant glass splashbacks suit all domestic hob types. Gas hobs produce the most radiant heat, but wall temperatures rarely exceed 150°C in normal use, while electric and induction generate less. Toughened glass handles this easily.
For a panel sized specifically for behind a cooker or hob, see our heat resistant cooker splashbacks. For full wall coverage, explore our kitchen glass splashback range.
Heat resistance comes from the glass, not the finish. Every colour, print, and style offers the same performance, whether you choose coloured glass splashbacks, painted glass splashbacks, or a clear toughened glass splashback. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a glass splashback directly behind a gas hob?
Can I put a glass splashback directly behind a gas hob?
Yes. Our toughened glass splashbacks are designed for use behind gas hobs. The glass withstands the radiant heat produced during cooking without cracking or discolouring. We recommend leaving a small gap (typically 50mm or more) between the hob and the glass, which is standard practice for most kitchen installations.
What temperature can a toughened glass splashback handle?
What temperature can a toughened glass splashback handle?
Toughened glass can withstand temperatures up to approximately 250°C without issue. The wall surface behind a domestic gas or electric hob typically reaches 100°C to 150°C during cooking, well within the safe operating range. Sudden, extreme temperature changes (thermal shock) are also much less of a risk with toughened glass compared to standard glass.
Will heat discolour a printed or painted glass splashback?
Will heat discolour a printed or painted glass splashback?
No. The print or paint is applied to the back of the glass and cured at high temperatures during production. The finished surface is stable and will not discolour, yellow, or degrade from the heat generated during normal cooking.
Is toughened glass safer than standard glass?
Is toughened glass safer than standard glass?
Yes. Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. In the unlikely event of breakage, it shatters into small, blunt granules rather than sharp shards, significantly reducing the risk of injury. This is why toughened glass is classified as safety glass and is the only type we use for splashbacks.
