A thin decorative panel of ordinary glass sold under the same name is not, and the difference between the two is not visible to the eye once either one is fitted to a wall. That gap is where most of the confusion around this question actually sits.
How Toughened Glass Earns Its Heat Resistance
A toughened glass splashback starts as standard glass, heated past 600°C and then cooled rapidly with high pressure air. That process locks the outer surface into compression while the core sits in tension, and it is that internal stress pattern, not anything added afterwards, that gives toughened glass four to five times the strength of the untreated glass it began as. Is toughened glass the same as heat resistant glass?
For splashback purposes, yes. "Heat resistant" is the outcome. "Toughened" is the process that produces it. A splashback described as heat resistant without any mention of toughening is worth a second look before you buy, because that claim on its own tells you nothing about how the glass was actually made.
Does Colour or Printing Change How Heat Resistant It Is
No, and this is one of the more common questions we get asked. On every printed and coloured panel we make, the colour sits behind the glass rather than on the surface facing into the room. The toughened glass itself is what faces the heat, the cleaning cloth, and the grease from cooking. The colour never touches any of it. That is also why a printed toughened glass splashback holds its finish under normal kitchen conditions in a way that a surface coating never could.
Where a coloured splashback can run into trouble is not the glass and not the colour, it is the adhesive used to fit it. Certain solvent based adhesives can react with the paint or print backing and cause discolouration or bubbling near the heat source. That is an installation issue, not a proof that coloured glass is somehow less heat resistant than clear glass. It isn't. The heat resistance comes entirely from the toughening process, and the colour sitting behind the glass has no bearing on that at all.
Does the colour or print on a glass splashback fade from heat?
Not from the glass being toughened, no. Fitted correctly with the right adhesive, a coloured or printed panel keeps its finish for as long as a plain one does. Fitted with the wrong adhesive near a heat source, the risk is bubbling or discolouration at the backing, not the glass itself failing. Ask your supplier what adhesive they specify before you fit one yourself, particularly if the panel is going directly behind a hob.
How Glass Actually Compares to Tile and Stainless Steel
Stainless steel handles raw, sustained heat better than any splashback material on the market, and it is the standard in commercial kitchens for exactly that reason. Ceramic and porcelain tile are also naturally heat resistant and can sit behind most hob types without restriction. A toughened glass splashback holds up to roughly 400°C, which comfortably covers what a domestic hob produces, but it is not the single best performer on heat tolerance alone, and claiming otherwise would not be honest.
Where glass pulls ahead is everywhere else that matters day to day. One continuous surface with no grout lines to collect grease. Nothing to scrub between joints. A finish that does not dull, chip, or need resealing the way tile grout does after a few years of steam and splashes. If raw heat tolerance were the only factor in a kitchen wall, steel would win outright. It isn't the only factor, and for most kitchens the seamless surface and the cleaning routine matter more than the last fifty degrees of thermal headroom.
Is stainless steel more heat resistant than glass?
Yes, in terms of raw sustained heat tolerance. What steel does not offer is the seamless, printable surface glass provides, and it shows fingerprints and scratches in a way toughened glass does not. Which material wins depends on what you are actually optimising for, and for most domestic kitchens that is not maximum heat tolerance beyond what any hob will ever produce.
How to Check a Splashback Is Genuinely a Toughened Glass Splashback
Ask three things before you buy. First, is the glass toughened, and can the supplier confirm it to BS EN 12150, the British Standard covering thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass. Second, what thickness, since 6mm is the standard for domestic kitchens and anything thinner sold as a splashback is worth questioning. Third, has the glass been heat soak tested. Heat soak testing catches microscopic nickel sulfide inclusions that can occasionally cause a toughened panel to fail spontaneously years after installation, and a supplier who tests for this will say so without being pressed on it.
A supplier who answers all three without hesitation is one worth ordering from. A supplier who only says "yes it's heat resistant glass" without any of the detail behind it has not actually answered the question.
Is thin decorative glass heat resistant, or does it need to be 6mm toughened?
No, and keep it away from a hob entirely. Wall art panels, cabinet front glass, anything sold decoratively rather than as a splashback, none of it goes through the same manufacturing or testing. 6mm became the standard kitchen splashback thickness for a specific reason. It is the dimension the toughening process is applied to and tested against, over and over, across the industry. Thickness on its own does nothing. A thick panel of untreated glass is exactly as vulnerable to heat as a thin one. Toughening is what changes the equation, not millimetres.
Can a glass splashback discolour from heat over time?
Not from the glass itself. Years of normal hob heat will not cloud, discolour, or degrade a properly toughened panel. Something has usually gone wrong elsewhere if a splashback does start changing colour or clarity over time. The adhesive or backing reacting with sustained heat exposure is the far more likely culprit than the glass breaking down, and that is the whole reason fitting method deserves as much attention as the glass specification itself.
